House Dems Put Politics Over Workers, Kill Delegate Tata’s No Tax On Tips Legislation

Richmond, VA -

Putting election year politics ahead of hard working Virginians, Democrats in the House of Delegates killed the No Tax On Tips Legislation Championed by Governor Glenn Youngkin at the state level.

Governor Youngkin states that his plan which follows President Trump’s famous “No Tax On Tips Proposal” will benefit working class Virginians and invigorate the commonwealth economy.

His plan states:

Virginians who earn tips will be able to claim a deduction on their state tax return, provided the income is included in their federal adjusted gross income. The Department of Taxation will use IRS data and employer-reported W-2 information to ensure compliance.

Democrats didn't care.

Again, Virginia House Democrats showed why servers and small restaurant owners are moving to the Republican Party across the nation. Just think back to 2020 and the shutting down of the restaurant industry by then Democrat Governor Ralph Northam.

Remember:

Governor Ralph Northam shut down restaurants, then allowed them to reopen but only if they jumped through endless and senseless bureaucratic obstacles that proved to be non-effective in preventing the spread of Covid-19.

And now in another major blow to the restaurant industry, House Democrats killed HB 1965 Chief Patroned by Virginia Beach Delegate Anne Ferrell Tata, daughter in-law of Former longtime Delegate, “Coach” Bob Tata. Tata represents the Resort area of Virginia Beach home to the Commonwealth’s top hospitality producers. From large beautiful hotels to small mom and pop restaurants, Tata’s legislation would have helped workers keep more of their hard earned money. Money that could have helped ease the squeeze on rising costs facing Virginians as a result of President Biden's massive federal deficit spending programs linked to inflation increases.

Delegate Tata (R - Virginia Beach)

“Politics got in the way of a good bill today. My No Tax On Tips Bill would have helped a lot of workers and businesses!” -Delegate Anne Ferrell Tata

This legislation was supported by Governor Glenn Youngkin, a close ally of President Trump’s to help invigorate the economy and increase workforce morale in the hospitality industry.

Election 2025

Republican Gubernatorial candidate Winsome Earle-Sears has signaled support of the widely popular proposal and would sign if elected Governor next legislative session, pending that the bill makes it out of the state legislature. The Lt. Governor was a key supporter of the plan at December's “No Tax On Tips Rally” held at McLean’s Restaurant in Richmond. A clear contrast for voters with House Democrats and liberal Democrat candidate for Governor Abigail Spanberger,
